   arise

1) arise는 happen과 같은 자동사다. 따라서 수동태로 쓰지는 않는다. 반면에 arouse는 타동사다. 따라서 '-이 일어나다'라고 할 때는 수동태로 써야한다.

   These problems have been arised as a result of overpopulation.(*)
   These problems have arisen as a result of overpopulation.

   arrive

1) '어떤 도시에 도착하다'고 할 때는 in을 쓰고 역이나 공항, 건물(station, airport, building)에 도착할 때는 at을 쓴다.

   We'll arrive to London at two in the morning.(*)
   We'll arrive in London at two in the morning.

   She arrived the station just in time to catch the train.(*)
   She arrived at the station just in time to catch the train.

   artificial

1) artificial은 자연적인 것이 아니라 인공적인 것으로 만들어진 것(not made of natural materials)을 말하며 man-made는 사람에 의해 만들어진 것을 말한다.

   The city has suffered both natural and artificial disasters.(*)
   The city has suffered both natural and man-made disasters.

2) 어떤 화학적 작용에 의해 만들어진 인위적인 것에는 synthetic을 쓴다.

   He managed to lose weight by eating artificial diet foods.(*)
   He managed to lose weight by eating synthetic diet foods.

   as

1) 명사를 비교할 때 '-같은'의 뜻은 as가 아니라 like를 쓴다. as는 as-as, not so-as, the same - as에서 사용한다.

   His skin is not as the skin of a young man.(*)
   His skin is not like the skin of a young man.

2) 어떤 범주(class, category)를 이야기할 때 '-같은'이라고 할 때는 such as나 like를 쓴다.(as를 쓰지 않는다)

   The book is concerned with important social issues as child abuse and women's rights.(*)
   The book is concerned with important social issues such as child abuse and women's rights.

3) 실제 어떤 상황이 아닌데 '-인 것처럼'할 때는 as if(가정법)를 쓴다.

   She looked at everyone as she were their superior.(*)
   She looked at everyone as if she were their superior.

4) as well as 다음에는 -ing를 쓴다.

   Every week he wrote her three letters, as well as telephoned her.(*)
   Every week he wrote her three letters, as well as telephoning her.

   ashamed

1) 나쁜 어떤 것을 했기 때문에 부끄러워하는 것은 ashamed이고 사회적 통념으로 편안치 못하고 걱정이 될 때는 embarrassed를 쓴다.

   I always feel ashamed when I have to speak in public.(*)
   I always feel embarrassed when I have to speak in public.

   aspect

1) aspect는 어떤 상황, 생각, 문제 등의 특징이나 그 일부 양상을 의미하며 point of view는 어떤 상황, 사건, 문제 등을 바라보는 특별한 관점을 말한다.

   From a biological aspect, the two plants are very similar.(*)
   From a biological point of view, the two plants are very similar.

2)  이미 말한 어떤 것을 되짚어 이야기 할 때 '이러한 점에서'라고 표현하려면 in this respect라고 해야한다. in this aspect라고 하지 않는다.

   Another function of newspapers is to shape public opinion and in this aspect the Guardian is very influential indeed.(*)
