   alone

1) alone은 그냥 혼자 있는 것이고 lonely는 혼자 있어 외롭다는 뜻을 갖는다.

   I was very alone at first but then I made some friends.(*)
   I was very lonely at first but then I made some friends.

2) '혼자서' 무슨 일을 했다고 할 때는 alone을 쓰면 안되고(alone은 그냥 혼자 있다는 뜻이기 때문) on one's own을 쓴다.

   Children learn a lot by doing things alone.(*)
   Children learn a lot by doing things on their own.

   anger

1) 화를 참다고 할 때는 control one's anger이 아니라 control(keep, lose) one's temper이라고 해야 한다.

   He'll have to learn how to control his anger.(*)
   He'll have to learn how to control his temper.

   answer

1) 문제나 질문(a problem or question)에 대한 답이라고 할 때는 for가 아니라 to를 써야 한다.

   They still can't find an answer for his problem.(*)
   They still can't find an answer to his problem.

2) answer이 답장하다, 전화 받다 등 동사로 쓰일 때는 to를 쓰지 않고 바로 목적어를 쓴다.

   It has taken them almost two months to answer to my letter.(*)
   It has taken them almost two months to answer my letter.

3) answer의 목적어가 앞에 나온 말을 반복하는 것일 때는 목적어를 쓰지 않고 다른 것일 때만 목적어를 쓴다.

   I rang the number you gave me but nobody answered me.(*)
   I rang the number you gave me but nobody answered.

   apologize

1) '-에 대해 사과하다'고 할 때는 사람을 바로 목적어로 쓰면 안되고 to를 쓰고 사람을 써야한다.

   The waiter was made to apologize my father.(*)
   The waiter was made to apologize to my father.

2) '-에 대해 사과하다'고 할 때도 for를 쓰고 대상을 써야한다.

   She insisted on apologizing her husband's behaviour.(*)
   She insisted on apologizing for her husband's behaviour.
